I have a new weekly column at The Escapist, Exploding Barrels. Each week I take on a different gaming trope and give reasonable excuses as to why it exists in the game. It’s (hopefully) funny.

Big red barrels are perhaps the most common trope in all of video games. You could see it as a crutch for developers, but it’s part of the common language of games. A red barrel is as crucial to games as the jump button. Not every game needs it, but it’s a comfort to the player when it’s there. Removing this trope would be like removing the word “is” from a gamer’s vocabulary. And no matter what your definition of “is” is, we can all agree it’s a pretty crucial part of our world.

There’s only one reason to work as a games journalist: You want to spend your life talking about games. You have to love talking about games to survive in this business. Being able to write, honestly, comes second to that. You can learn to write, you can’t learn to care about games. My passion is how I got a job at IGN in 2001. That can help you get a job in 2012. Of course, passion isn’t all that matters. To learn those other crucial skills, you can join a dozen other individuals in a six-month online class I’m teaching.

Sign up for my class

The class begins July 14 and is held online (through Skype) with private sessions included and critiques of your writing to boot. It costs $395, which is certainly a pretty penny, but it is a considerable amount of interaction and feedback over several months, giving you time to develop your skills.

The class is limited to 13 students and in the first few hours of being posted, three spots have already been claimed. Taking this class is no guarantee you will end up at IGN or GameSpot of OXM – but you will learn how the games industry works, how to write effective headlines, and how to take steps to further a career in games journalism. Also, you get to hang out with me online. It’s likely I won’t be wearing pants.

Here’s the official course description:

What is the most successful entertainment launch of all time? No, it’s not James Cameron’s Avatar. It’s actually Activision’s video game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. “The video game industry makes more money annually than the movie business,” says instructor Hilary Goldstein, “and the competition to become one of the few who writes about games has grown intense.

“I worked at IGN.com, the largest video games website in the world, for nearly a decade, spending the last two years as Editor-in-Chief. Currently, I am a contributor to more than a half-dozen magazines and websites including GameSpot, the Escapist, Venturebeat, and the Official Xbox Magazine as well as a marketing consultant for numerous game publishers. In that time, I’ve worked with dozens of writers, teaching them how to be successful in the games industry.

“Many gamers dream of having a job where they can write about video games. Every week, I get hounded with questions about how to get a job in the industry. Because it’s about video games, most people – even a lot of our journalist hopefuls – assume it’s easy to do. That’s not true. It’s actually incredibly demanding work that requires specialized writing skills that few know. A lot of intangibles factor into success in this field.”

In this online class Hilary will explain the role of journalists in covering games, show you how video games are made and marketed, talk about how to conceive, pitch and write articles, provide steps to build a fervent fan base, and give you tips for getting a job writing about what you love.

This course requires you download Skype (a free group communications tool). As members of a vibrant Web community, you will receive craft advice, motivation, and support through:

• Monthly 1.5-hour group Skype chat sessions online to discuss thought-provoking lectures on game design and game journalism. Transcripts will be available for students who are not able to attend.
• Submission to Hilary of up to four articles for written feedback, to be discussed during one-on-one Skype conversations at times that are convenient to you.
• Weekly email check-ins with Hilary to review goals, discuss progress, and address questions.
• A private Skype group where you’ll have the ability to engage in conversations with classmates, share writing, and discuss your favorite games, along with optional writing exercises to hone your skills.

At the end of the course, you’ll have a concrete plan to get your work in front of millions of readers.

Sign up for my class

Got questions about the course? Ask in the comments and I will answer.

A year-and-a-half ago I announced through my blog on IGN that I was switching my default system to PS3. It’s a bit dated, as it speculates on the potential successes and failures of both PS3 and Xbox 360 heading into 2011, but I still feel the arguments have merit. In an effort to continue to catalog my more notable pieces from my 10-year history with IGN, I’m posting a link to that old blog. Oddly, I tend to play mostly on PC these days. I guess neither PS3 or X360 won me over after all.

The best thing about Heroes is that you can transfer your earned gold to your Fable: The Journey character. Despite the tie-in between the two games, Fable Heroes has no Kinect functionality.

My new monthly opinion piece, “5 Good Reasons”, kicked off today on GamesBeat. Each month, I take what is considered the wrong side of a controversy and give you five reasons why I’m right. I figured I’d start things off with the biggest of all ongoing gamer debates — are games art. Of course, games are art if you’re a gamer and to say otherwise is blasphemy. Well, I’m a blasphemer.

Gamers worry that if what they play isn’t recognized as an art form, it loses validity. That’s a very limited view of what video games offer. Games are something new, something that can’t be so easily defined as “art” or even as pure entertainment. Emotions are elicited in a whole new way with games so that even something as basic as Pong can cause a more visceral reaction than just about anything shown in the New York MOMA. Don’t confine a whole new way to experience and think about the world to old concepts. Games are something new, something different.

The Premise

21 Jump Street embraces its role as a cheap cash-in to a well-liked ’80s show. Instead of trying to recapture the 21 Jump Street magic, it goes all-out as a slapstick buddy cop film. Two good-for-nothing cops (Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum) get tossed onto the revamped Jump Street program and must infiltrate a high school to stop a new designer drug, HFS (Holy Fucking Shit!), from hitting the streets.

The Good Bits

Surprise! This isn’t a shitty movie at all. Of all the silly buddy cop films of the past decade, this is the funniest. I nearly pissed myself when Jonah Hill’s character started praying to Korean Jesus and that was just the start of a very funny 90 minutes. Worth it for the awesome Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise cameos.

The Bad Bits

Like most buddy cop films, the plot is pretty thin. Two idiots manage to bumble their way into one of the biggest busts in Jump Street history. They succeed, get the girl, etc., etc. If you haven’t seen the original TV show, some of the best gags will fall flat.
