After spending a decade attempting to get short stories published in magazines that, quite honestly, don’t pay much of anything, I’ve decided it’s time to go it on my own. I’ve had some success in traditional attempts at publishing — six stories published, one Pushcart Prize nomination. But too often I’m told, “Awesome story, but not for us.”
So I’m going it on my own. I’m working right now on a short story collection, which will be available on Amazon.com and Kindle in the spring of 2011. Why so long? Well, I’m not about to just throw a bunch of unedited fiction out there. An author can only catch so many things on their own. I’ll be enlisting a few copy-editing friends to make sure the prose is clean.
Also, I don’t want to short-change anyone willing to spend some cash on my work. So, while there are plenty of great stories ready to go, there are also three stories I need to finish and have in top-notch shape.
The collection is a nice mix of humor and introspection. Each story has some element of the fantastic — super heroes, swamp creatures, Martian cannibals, and immortals make appearances in these tales. I can’t promise it’s for everyone, but I love these stories.
Here’s how the lineup looks like right now, though it’s almost certain to change in the next two months of production:
The Lost Season
They Eat People on Phobos
Israel Stein, Private Dick
A Bird, a Plane, a Man…
At Home in the Big Black
Sadness, Like a Warm Cup of Cocoa
Job Interview with the Vampire
The Devil’s Art
The Monster Maker
Ravi’s Funeral
Firsts
Even Swamp Creatures get the Blues
Seven Sins for Seven Dwarves
The Dream Eater
Ogre with a Clockwork Soul
A Hero for Tuscany
The New Terrorists

I shall be buying this
holding you to that, Taylor
Good luck. I think this is maybe brave? I don’t know — like you said, there’s a stigma attached to self-publishing; like, people the self-published title is an invitation for assumptions and maybe loaded questions: why didn’t it get any interest from publishing company?
I always point out David Moody whenever someone uses “self-published” as a diminutive back-handed compliment. Moody published a hell of a disturbing/horror/dystopian book that ended up selling over a half-million copies (thanks Wikipedia). Not bad for a “self-published” author.
I liked a lot ‘even swamp creatures get the blues’. Good luck on this challenge Hil.
I’m gonna check these out fo’sho’
Nice, this is a good way to go, i will wait semi-patiently for you to get this done so i may hold it in my grubby hands. Thanks Hil.
Looking forward to it.
Awesome. I’ll be buying a copy. Can’t wait to read more of your work.
I’ll buy anything you put out, big watermelon! (BEYOND!!!!!!!!)
Good luck man! It’ll be awesome no doubt.
Big Cheese Good luck, You got my support.
And as the rest of the words has now loaded I see that you answered my question. Well, good luck anyways.
I’ll definitely pick this up. Can we expect some cynical Hil in these stories? Or are the stories a mixed bag of genres? Either way it will be purchased. Good Luck.
ant wait man
Good luck with this. Consider me a buyer.
